Rural Iowa Sausage: History & Tradition of Brats on the Backroads
By: Jay Goodvin (The Iowa Gallivant)
About the Book
In 1882, City Meat Market opened in New Albin with what became its famous ring Bologna. It is one of the oldest meat shops in all of Iowa, a state that held more than 400 of these shops at one time. Locally famous institutions like the Holy Cross Locker closed its doors in 2018. But customers can still get a taste of their popular products with their recipes sold to other trusted sausage makers keeping the tradition alive. In Early, Ray Nellis and his locker made it through the Great Depression and World War II rationing. Dayton Meat Products even offered some of the best pies in the state. Author Jay Goodvin recants the history of the famous lockers, famous products and dedicated Iowa customers.
