Geology Day and Volunteer Day – Rossville Roadside Park (Hwy 76 and Waterville Road/X32 )

The free geology program and rock/fossil ID will be held on April 13 at  2 pm.

Local geologist Phil Burgess of Prairie du Chien will present the unique geological history of our area, with a special focus on sinkholes. You will also learn about when this entire area was under the ocean. The conversation will be engaging and questions are highly encouraged!

After the presentation, kids and grown-ups alike are welcome to bring any local rock or fossil you have and Burgess will tell you its fascinating history – which will likely go back more than a million years.

Jeff Abbas will also be bringing a large-specimen microscope to the event. It has an 11-inch view screen, and attendees can enjoy seeing their rocks and fossils under a quality microscope.

The program will be held at the Rossville Roadside Park, an Allamakee County Conservation Board property, 841 State Hwy 76, Monona IA (watch for signs). Although this park has an address of Monona, it is located 11 miles north of Monona, near the intersection of Highway 76 and Waterville Road/X32, about one mile east of Rossville.

There are picnic tables at this roadside park, but if you are more comfortable in a chair please bring your own.

This program is co-sponsored by Friends of Yellow River State Forest and the Allamakee County Conservation Board.
