New Albin was built on an extensive terrace of sand and gravel adjacent to the Mississippi River. It was home to the late Harris "Shooky" Fink, the baseball wizard, who spent a lifetime coaching the boys and men teams including Babe Ruth. Today sportspeople enjoy fishing and hunting along the banks of the Mississippi. Many deer and wild turkeys are seen throughout the area and bald eagles nest nearby. The New Albin Wildlife area and the Minnesota Hardwood Forest help to preserve much like it was before New Albin was. New Albin Elementary (K-4) is located in New Albin which is affiliated with Eastern Allamakee School District, located in Lansing. The current population is approximately 530.
